We received a gift for Christmas that we don’t need - a duplicate of something we already have and don’t need two of.
Amazon seems to be set up for hassle-free returns for things purchased from 11/1/2018-12/31/2018 and returned before 1/31/2019. Unfortunately, my mom has been ill so she had plenty of time to shop early for gifts this year and she bought this gift in October so the return window ran out in November.
I’m still on chat with someone from Amazon. I’ve talking to the FIFTH person today. It all started going sideways when I tried to make life easier by returning the item to the Amazon locker around the corner from the house.
First world problems.

Just write “TO JEFF BEZOS” on it and stick it in the mail.
You should get your money back a few weeks later.

Here’s story of stellar c us tomer service from a store that will remain nameless:
I give my mother a $100 gift card I had but didn’t need
Their website tells her she needs a PIN when she tried to use it, but there was no accompanying PIN, and nothing about a PIN on the card
She calls them, they say she’ll need to come into a store to get a new card
There are no stores within several hundred miles
They say they may be able to mail her a new card
Before I can do that, I point out there is a scratch off section on the card that is probably the PIN. Why they couldn’t tell her this, or use consistent labeling beyond me.
She places her order. It fails during checkout due to some site issue and says to try again later.
She tries again later, it says there is no money on her card.
She calls their customer support for the third-time.
She’s told the first order went through, given an order number, and told her order will arrive by Christmas.
Christmas comes and goes. The order number is invalid according to their tracking site.
She calls them yet again. They tell her the order was canceled. They don’t say why, or why they didn’t notify her.
Since it’s past Christmas, she doesn’t want everything she ordered before, so they agree to redo the order for one $60 item, and credit her credit card $40 for the remaining items.
Item has still not arrived.
They did issue the $40 credit.
They also charged her credit card $60 even though everything should have been paid for via the gift card.

My father-in-law recently had some issue with Amazon and said, “Well I’ll just call them!”
One does not simply *call* Amazon. I told him good luck.

With that kind of mess up,my vote is Sears, Hudson's Bay Company, Eaton's, or some other dinosaur.

None of those named, but “some other dinosaur” is definitely a fair description.
